In 2014 Brian cycled from the Vatican in Rome, through the Catholic culture of Italy, across the mountains of Greece and its Orthodox culture and into the heart of Muslim Turkey ending at the pilgrimage destination of Rumi’s Tomb in Konya. He started at the head of the institutional church and ended in the the heart of religious mysticism.
In 2016 he completed his book Alone: A 4,000 Mile Search for Belonging that chronicled his journey through the American West as he sought to carve out a new life after several losses that piled up within a short two year period. He is currently making stabs at the second book From Rome to Rumi where he will share his experiences of this second pilgrimage and his movement toward religious mysticism.
His next adventure is set to take place in September, 2017 where he will join a small group of cyclists in the Himalayas where they will make an attempt to ascend to Everest Base Camp at 17,300 feet in elevation. The impetus for the trip was Brian’s realization that many of the epiphanies and revelations in religious literature take place in or on mountains. He will be studying the place that mountains play in spiritual experience across all the major religions.
